Why I am Against The Ground Zero Mosque
Part 2 - Freedom

"Why doesn't God just make us love him?" Because forced love is not love at all. One must be free to choose to love or hate, ignore or worship, believe or not, follow or stray.

The men and women who built this country understood freedom because they understood history. And they were living under a system that was becoming far less free. The Declaration of Independence not only states how important freedom is, but states that it is obvious (self-evident) and that it is provided by God:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Freedom doesn't guarantee that happiness, but it does guarantee the liberty, the freedom to pursue it. The Declaration again:

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

We are guaranteed the right to freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The Bill of Rights acknowledges what the government can not take away: this includes your Bible or your Koran, your M16 or your AK-47 (although, you can't have auto versions of those, courtesy of the National Firearms Act of 1934). This doesn't mean that the government doesn't attempt to take away or restrict these freedoms (did I mention the National Firearms Act of 1934?), it's just that ideally -- Constitutionally -- it isn't supposed to and that any restrictions must be with the "consent of the governed."

Does pastor Terry Jones have a right to burn a Koran (or a flag or a draft card or a bra)? He certainly does. Will burning a Koran incite Muslims to violence? Frankly, no. Oh, Muslims can "use it as an excuse," but it's just one of many excuses, some of which include land, clothing, diet, speech, aka "freedom."

Muslims have been doing violence against other Muslims, Jews, Christians, atheists, animists, and you-name-it-ists centuries before Terry Jones, before 9/11, before Columbus. It's what they do. I'm not talking about the occasional nut job who uses religion to do something dangerous, violent, or stupid. I'm talking about the very foundation of Islam. One toasted Koran, more or less, isn't going to finally make Muslims violent. They crossed that bridge long ago and mostly because Islam is not about freedom.

If Terry Jones is free do burn a Koran, should he? No. It's childish. It draws attention to Terry Jones, not to the Mosque, and not to Christ; and it is not loving (or even "tough loving"). It is not what Christians do. Now, if Terry Jones said, "I'm going to go to Ground Zero and pray every day about this and invite Christians from everywhere to do the same," I'd be all for it.

How about building something? Can't I build whatever I want wherever I want? No and there are a host of reasons why. You cannot build something on someone else's property, of course. You also can't build something on your property that you're not zoned for or that would violate your neighbors ability to enjoy their properties or that would be dangerous. Sounds reasonable and it is.

Thus, you can't build a strip joint right next to a school. It would be a stupid place to build it anyway, and yes, "stupid" is something to consider. Or, to be more gentle, replace "stupid" with "unwise." Pornographic billboards? Abercrombie & Fitch might think it's cool, but porn for marketing is so 1990s, and they wouldn't fly in my neighborhood (and I live in Los Angeles).

What of those individuals who want to build a 15-story Mosque at Ground Zero in Manhattan, site where some 3,000 people were slaughtered in the name of Allah? Do they have the same right to be unwise that Terry Jones has? Feisal Abdul Rauf (occupation: Imam) maintains that by building a mosque at Ground Zero -- scheduled to open on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attack -- he and his backers are "promoting integration, tolerance of difference and community cohesion through arts and culture" and that the Mosque "will provide a place where individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, will find a center of learning, art, and culture; and most importantly, a center guided by Islamic values in their truest form -- compassion, generosity, and respect for all."

I wonder if all Muslims got Rauf's memo:

"Our belief is that Islam is the final divine religion, supersedes all other divine religions, and that all other religions are abrogated by the prophet hood of Mohammad PBUH. In another words; no one has the right to stay on his/her Christianity or Judaism after the prophecy of Mohammad PBUH. Based on the above, if any one from the people of scriptures has received the message of Islam clearly, yet, insisted on his belief, then he is -- from an Islamic perspective -- a disbeliever. Our doctrine is that paradise is granted for all original Muslims, and for those who embraced Islam after acknowledging the prophecy of Mohammad PBUH. Meanwhile, we believe that hellfire is granted for the disbelievers, which include anyone did not believe in the prophethood of the messenger that he/she lived during his/her life. This includes anyone that received the message of Islam, and passed away before embracing Islam." Here's the link.

Taking Islam as just a religion (which I'll cover in Part 3 of this series), building the Mosque may actually be more than unwise. It may be unconstitutional as it is being promoted by politicians and may be funded by tax-payer dollars.
